Hell’s Half Acre — South Fork Trinity Trail Work Day

October 18 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
$10.00

October 18, 2026 · 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
South Fork Trinity River · Six Rivers National Forest

Join the Bigfoot Trail Alliance and staff from Six Rivers National Forest for a day of trail stewardship along one of the wildest and most beautiful stretches of the South Fork Trinity River.

We’ll meet at the Wildberries Marketplace parking lot in Arcata at 8:00 AM and travel together to Hell’s Half Acre, returning to Arcata by approximately 5:00 PM. Want to leave the driving to us? Jump aboard the new Bigfoot Trail Alliance van! Transportation is available for volunteers who would like a ride.

And we’ll provide lunch for everyone.

A Wild Corner of the South Fork Trinity

Hell’s Half Acre follows a spectacular section of the Wild and Scenic South Fork Trinity River, winding along ridges above the river through a wonderfully diverse mosaic of mixed-evergreen forest, oak woodland, grassland, and rocky slopes.

The trail stays relatively low in elevation—generally below 1,500 feet—but moves through dramatic changes in slope and aspect. North-facing forests support cool, shady plant communities, while sunny south-facing hillsides open into oak woodland and wildflower-rich grasslands. The trail follows the ridgeline high above the river for its first several miles before eventually descending toward the South Fork Trinity.

It is a beautiful, rugged piece of country—and exactly the kind of trail where a day of many hands can make a real difference.

The Work

We’ll spend the day helping bring this trail back into shape. Depending on conditions and priorities identified with Six Rivers National Forest staff, volunteers will:

  • Lop and brush encroaching vegetation
  • Improve tread and restore the walking surface
  • Saw and clear downed trees and limbs

No previous trail-work experience is necessary. We’ll provide tools, instruction, and safety guidance.

Come Prepared for Poison Oak!

Poison oak is omnipresent along this trail. Long pants, long sleeves, gloves, and sturdy footwear are strongly recommended. If you are highly sensitive to poison oak, this may not be the best volunteer trip for you.

Expect a full day outside, hiking and working with hand tools on uneven terrain. Bring water, a daypack, appropriate layers, and a willingness to get a little dirty.

We’ll Provide

Bigfoot Trail Alliance will provide lunch, trail tools, instruction, and transportation from Arcata for those who want it.

This is a great chance to spend an autumn day along the South Fork Trinity, meet fellow trail stewards, work alongside Six Rivers National Forest staff, and help keep a remarkable trail alive.
