Stellar Volunteer Work!
From June 23rd-June 29th 2018 a crew of seven volunteers set out to clear one of the most difficult to navigate sections of the Bigfoot Trail, through the heart of the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness. This was a new era for work on the Bigfoot Trail, as we partnered with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the Backcountry Horsemen of California.
Our gear was packed in seven miles by horses and mules, while the volunteer crew made the mellow walk to camp without heavy packs. We made a dry camp above Robinson Creek (headwaters of the mighty Eel River) for five nights. Over the next five days, our time involved brushing a lot of scrub oak and ceanothus, clearing downed trees, and searching for a missing hiker. The hiker was found, alive, and we also managed to maintain six miles of trail!
