Trail work in the Marble Mountain Wilderness

Jacob Shinners – Post Author

Board Member and Trail Crew Leader

This is Jacob’s third year working with BFTA and his first as one of the crew leaders. Thanks for all you do Jacob.

A Bigfoot Trail Crew of 13 volunteers spent the last week clearing trails in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Together, we cleared over 5 miles from the junction of the Box Camp Mountain Trail, through Marble Valley, and over the pass into Upper Woolly Creek toward both Big Elk Lake and down stream. Unfortunately, the trail was so overgrown and full of downed logs we were only able to clear the same section we cleared in June 2022.

Once into the Woolly Creek section the team was met with a severely burned forest with southern exposure–here temperatures went into the 90’s. The crew met the challenge and cleared 145 logs, some over 30 inch diameter with many 12 to 18 inches. If they weren’t cutting they were brushing and treading the trail too.

The trail still needs a lot of work past Big Elk Lake down Woolly Creek. We have another week in August planned and will work further down into the untouched area. Thanks to the work done by this crew, we will be able to camp a lot closer to the area that needs the most attention. Therefore getting longer work days and more trail cleared.

The Bigfoot Trail would like to thank the Forest Service for there packer support getting our tools and supplies out in the wilderness. We also thank the Siskiyou Mountain Club who is working lower Woolly Creek and trying to meet our efforts from below.
