Great, that’s good to know. Thanks, Erin!

  • Thank you for sharing your trailhead logistics plans, Brian! I have looked into the public transit and greyhound options as well. It all looks totally doable from Crescent City all the way to Red Bluff with stops in Arcata and Redding. It’s just those last 40 or 50 miles to the actual trailhead that are tricky. I don’t have a good solution yet,…[Read more]

That’s good to know. I will certainly be hanging my food. I am sure these bears are not nearly as habituated as the bears in the Sierra though.

Thanks for the tips. I will definitely take these options into considerations. Sage Clegg’s website is really helpful. Thank you!

  • And, yes, I am aware how prone this region is to wildfires, which is what I am most concerned about for this trip, especially because I am planning to thru-hike the BFT in October.

I have the BFTA track for my GPS, so that will be of tremendous help. Yes, I already suspected that personal map-making software like TOPO! would be the way to go for this trail. Thank you!

  • That’s too bad about the break ins. I have left my car at numerous trailheads for weeks at a time in the Sierra, Utah and Arizona. I have a pretty old car with a ton of stickers on it and I won’t leave anything valuable behind. Anyway, good to know.

I live in San Diego, so I don’t have any contacts in Northern California (in fact, I have never…[Read more]

  • Mary, thank you for your replies and info, which is very much appreciated! I regularly go backpacking in California, so I always keep my CA campfire permit in my pack (though nobody has ever asked me for it). I am glad to hear there is so little bureaucracy involved with this trail. I guess that’s not surprising though, given how relatively little…[Read more]

The GPX track does help a lot. Thanks!

  • I’m planning to hike the BFT northbound, leaving my car at the Ides Cove Trailhead. The obvious problem being how to get back to my car. I figure it won’t be too difficult to take public transit or hitch hike from Crescent City to Arcata. However, after that my intuition tells me that it gets problematic. Perhaps from Arcata I can hitch hike to…[Read more]

I agree! That’s what I was planning on doing. Just wanted to make sure. I imagine the Klamath Mountains to be a lot more remote and less visited than the Sierra, where you are guaranteed to come across lots of people and even the occasional Park Ranger on long trips.

  • Great, good to know. Thanks, Conifermann!

  • I was looking through the maps and identified three suitable resupply locations:

    1) Hayfork Post Office (~70 miles from the Southern Terminus)

    2) Mountain Meadow Resort (~140 miles from the Southern Terminus)

    3) Seiad Valley Post Office (~230 miles from the Southern Terminus)

I am planning to cover 15-20 miles per day, thru-hiking the BFT in…[Read more]

  • Are you legally required to carry a bear canister in any of the jurisdictions that the trail passes through? In the Sierra, bear canisters are required by law in some areas and you are not allowed to hang your food. Is this the case along the BFT or is it okay to just bring a bear hang?

  • I have done a lot of backpacking in the Sierra, where permits are pretty much required for every overnight trip. Is this the case with the BFT? If so, which agency issues the permit? Is it sufficient if I just secure one permit for The Ides Cove Trailhead for the entire trip? Are any other wilderness permits required to hike and camp in the…[Read more]

I have purchased the Kaufmann map set from the BFT Store, which offers helpful directions, but the 1:60,000 scale is not ideal for backcountry navigation. I am used to the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle maps (scale 1:24,000). I noticed that Kaufmann suggests some additional maps at the end of his guide/ map set. However, those maps do not show topo…[Read more]
