  • David Ura, who was missing for a awhile last summer while hiking the BFT and was the subject of a big search , just passed away on Dec. 7. He was only in his early 60’s. His liver gave out after metabolic imbalances that originated with being lost on the trail, according to his daughter as reported on NBC-5 Medford news tonite.

  • Hi, Scott–all the waypoints are ones I personally took on the trail. I have no lat long column on the spreadsheet. That would definitely be something to add. I used the physical description from the BFT guide as well as the mileage to locate water sources. I found water sources not in the guide and those I waypointed–I think they are in the…[Read more]

  • Hi, Scott:

I hiked the trail in 2015. I made a water chart spreadsheet for all the water sources on the BFT. It is in Excel but it would be great if it were on Google sheets–then people could update it as they hike in real time. I just hiked the Oregon Desert Trail and that is how they get up to date water reports. That and a lot of other BFT…[Read more]

When we drove to the Ides Cove Trailhead all we saw were logging trucks. I did meet a couple coming back to the trailhead as I was heading out, but trailhead users seem to be very sparse. I saw no one else on the trail for days after that until I hit the road on the other side of the Yolla Bollys. Your best bet would be to pay someone to pick you…[Read more]

I hiked the BFT in 2015 and trail angel for the PCT out of Ashland Oregon if you need any assistance in October–contact me via email–mkwart@gci.net or phone 541-864-0141.–Mary “Fireweed” Kwart

  • I was stopped by wildfire at Poker Flat last year when hiking the BFT, so I completed this section last week to Sand Camp on the South Fork of the Smith River. I was really glad I had a GPS–trail was impossible to find in many areas, starting above Harrington Lake. Lots of dead trees from an old wildfire. The newer fire last year has not impacted…[Read more]

  • You will also need a California Campfire permit if you are going to use a stove. You can get these online and print it out. Just Google it. I filled it out online and printed it to take with me.

A bear was in my friend’s camp at Twin Valley in the Siskiyou Wilderness last week. Luckily they hung the food and one used an Ursack. The bear appeared to have messed with the line hanging the food. I just finished the BFT section from Poker Flat to Sand Camp and bear scat and prints were numerous in the Siskyou Wilderness.

I personally would not leave my car at the Ides Cove trailhead for the time it would take to complete the BFT. Break ins are common at trailheads all over N. Calif. That being said, hitchhiking would be nearly impossible to the trailhead from any town. I corralled a friend to drive me to the trailhead and paid for gas. I also got someone to pick…[Read more]

I made my own topo maps with National Geographic topo. I used the BFTA track. I had to split it to avoid the waypoint limitations of my Garmin etrex 30. However–you could turn the waypoints into points of interest–my Garmin can store an unlimited number of these.

  • Water sources in the Siskiyou wilderness are all flowing copiously. Many fords on the West Fork of Clear Creek–I think more than in the guidebook. I camped at Willis Hole that night and my shoes were frozen solid the next morning last week.

Sage Clegg invented her own hiking alternate to Cave Junction to re-supply a few years ago. She has a website–www.sageclegg.com

I did the trail in 2015 and put a food cache where the trail meets the Bigfoot Highway, east of 199.

  • I will be hiking from Poker Flat through the Siskiyou Wilderness starting June 10 with some friends from a backpacking group in Ashland. They will hike to Raspberry Lake and return to Poker Flat and I will continue to Sand Flat to finish a section of the trail I couldn’t last year because of fire closures. Hoping against hope–but the Kelsey Trail…[Read more]

  • I’ll be hiking on the BFT starting June 9-10 to finish a section I had to skip because of fire closures last year–from Poker Flat to Sand Camp. I’ll be with several people from an Ashland backpacking group up to Raspberry lake–we’ll climb Preston Peak, then they will go back to Poker Flat, but I’ll continue back to the BFT and west. I will be on…[Read more]
